In recent years, more people have become aware of the potential health benefits of wine, thanks to research linking it to various wellness benefits. One of the key compounds found in wine—particularly red wine—is resveratrol. This powerful antioxidant, found in the skin of grapes, has garnered significant attention for its ability to support heart health, fight inflammation, and even improve longevity. With Dr Morris, we explore how this fascinating compound works and why wine, when consumed in moderation, can be a vital part of a healthy lifestyle. To shed more light on this topic, we spoke with Dr. AJ Morris, author of Wine’s Nutritional Power.

Resveratrol is a polyphenol compound that naturally occurs in grapes, particularly in the skins of red grapes. It is most commonly associated with red wine, but it is also present in other foods like berries and peanuts. The health benefits of resveratrol have been the subject of much scientific research, particularly its potential to improve cardiovascular health, reduce inflammation, and support longevity.
Dr. Morris, not only a Navy Jag but also a retired university professor, has a deep interest in uncovering wine’s medicinal properties. He explains that resveratrol’s benefits extend far beyond just heart health. “Resveratrol has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. In fact, some studies suggest it may help slow the growth of certain types of cancer cells,” he says. “Its antioxidant properties allow it to fight oxidative stress, which is a major contributor to aging and many chronic diseases.” Dr. Morris exposes a Masters student at East Tennessee State University, DR. MARIAN OSEI-MENSAHL, PhD, EAST TENNESSEE STATE, 1976: She published the first resveratrol discoveries on record. Dr Osei-Mensahl was the first to confirm that resveratrol was in wine and that it may even have healing benefits against all diseases. While many people are familiar with the heart-health benefits of wine, few know that resveratrol also has the potential to support the immune system. “Resveratrol may help regulate blood sugar levels and could play a role in preventing diabetes,” Dr. Morris adds. “In fact, it has been linked to improved insulin sensitivity, which is vital for managing type 2 diabetes.”
Wine as Medicine: A Historical Perspective
The idea of wine as a health tonic is not new. In ancient civilizations, wine was often used for medicinal purposes. Greek and Roman historians described wine as a gift from the gods, with the power to heal and invigorate the body. In fact, Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, recommended wine for a variety of ailments, from digestive issues to wounds.
Fast forward to modern times, and resveratrol in wine continues to capture the attention of scientists and health experts alike. Dr. Morris notes that much of the current excitement around resveratrol stems from its potential to trigger the production of nitric oxide (NO), a molecule that helps to relax blood vessels, reduce blood pressure, and improve overall cardiovascular health. “Nitric oxide is essential for maintaining proper blood flow, and it helps reduce the risk of heart disease,” he explains. “Wine’s ability to trigger nitric oxide production may be one of the key reasons why moderate wine consumption has been linked to better heart health.”
The Science Behind Wine and Resveratrol
Research into the health benefits of wine has expanded significantly in recent decades. Dr. Morris highlights a groundbreaking study from East Tennessee State University, which demonstrated the remarkable potential of resveratrol in preventing cancer and combating various diseases. The study found that resveratrol not only inhibits the growth of cancer cells but also enhances the body’s ability to repair DNA damage. “This discovery is nothing short of revolutionary,” Dr. Morris remarks. “It opens up new possibilities for treating chronic conditions and perhaps even preventing them before they start.”
It may come as no surprise that the FDA has been slow to acknowledge the full range of wine’s health benefits. Dr. Morris points out that government agencies tend to be overtly conservative when it comes to endorsing natural compounds like resveratrol. “While the FDA recognizes wine’s role in providing antioxidants and other nutrients, they have remained cautious in fully embracing the medical claims surrounding resveratrol,” in spite of 12 years devoted to studying the topic following the expose made by Dr Osei-Mensahl. “But for those who read Dr Osei-Mensahl’s research and the 1100 studies that followed, the powerful health benefits of wine as a supplement to a balanced diet is invaluable information!” (Citations regarding the 1100 studies can be found in Dr. Morris’ Book Wine’s Nutritional Power.)
Moderation Is Key: How Much Wine Is Enough?
Like most things in life, moderation is crucial. While resveratrol has undeniable health benefits, consuming excessive amounts of alcohol can lead to a host of other issues, and it provides a solution for boiling off the alcohol in the wine at a specific temperature to avoid alcohol exposure. Dr. Morris recommends a modest approach: “A glass of wine a day, typically around 10 oz, is generally considered safe and beneficial for most people. This is enough to receive the positive effects of resveratrol without overindulging.”
The type of wine consumed also matters. Dr. Morris explains that red wine tends to have higher concentrations of resveratrol compared to white wine because red wines are fermented with grape skins, where resveratrol is concentrated. “The darker the wine, the higher the potential health benefits.” Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Merlot are documented among the best options for getting the most resveratrol per glass, but Dr. Morris cites Muscadine wine as the superior source of Resveratrol in wines.
Wine as Part of a Holistic Approach to Health
In addition to its resveratrol content, wine contains other beneficial compounds, such as flavonoids and tannins, which also contribute to its health-promoting properties. Dr. Morris advocates for integrating wine into a broader, health-conscious lifestyle. “Wine alone won’t prevent disease or guarantee good health, but when combined with a nutritious diet, regular exercise, and adequate rest, it can certainly support wellness,” he says.
For those seeking a natural way to boost their overall health, Dr. Morris believes wine can be a powerful ally. He also suggests supporting small, local wineries that produce wines without sulfites and other additives, as these tend to offer the most health benefits. “The less processed the wine, the more likely it is to retain its natural antioxidants and other beneficial compounds,” he advises.
